Sundarban is a vast tract of forest and salt water swamp forming the lower part of the Ganges Delta, extending about 160miles (260km) along the Bay of Bengle, from the Hooghly River Estuary (India) to the Meghna River Estuary in Bangladesh.
The name Sundarban’s is perhaps derived from the term that means “forest of Sundari,” a reference to a species of the large mangrove trees endemic to the area.

The Sundarban’s is home to the majestic Royal Bengle Tiger and the site of a tiger preservation project launched in 1973. The cultivated northern area yields rice, sugarcane, timber and betel nuts. The animals of the Sundarban’s have adapted themselves to the environment in a unique manner. Even the tree in the Sundarban’s has an extremely thick cuticle which prevents transpiration and water loss. In 1977 it was declared a world heritage site.
