Jalpaiguri district commonly known to the world as “TARAI AND DOOARS” down in the shadows of the mighty Himalayas is a narrow stretch of land that connects North Eastern India with the rest of the country. Derived from the word “DOOAR” (Door to Bhutan), the Dooars valley also forms a gateway to the hill stations of North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam and the Far East. The valley stretches across a vast span of 130 kms. By 40 kms. The unending stretch of virgin forests interwoven with innumerable tea gardens is crisscrossed by the rivers Teesta, Jaldhaka, Torsha, Sankosh, Raidak, Newra, Jayanti, Dodoya, Murti, Mujnai, Chel, Banai, Hollong etc. and their innumerable tributaries trotting and rolling down from the hills.

The “TARAI AND DOOARS” valley are specially noted for their wildlife sanctuaries, the most notable National Parks, Tiger reserves, and Reserve Forests. These areas abound in a fascinating diversity of Flora & Fauna.

Savannah grasses are comprised of Saccharum spp.

Themeda Aeundinacea, T. Villosa, Setaria Palmifolia, Cymbopogan spp, Thysanolaena maxima, Phragmites, Karka, Arundo donax and Imperata cyclindrica. Flood plain grassland interspersed with marshy and swampy land and the adjoining riverine forests are the ideal habitat of the Rhinoceros & its associates. The main crop are Sal, Sisso, Khair, Champ, Chilaunee, Bahera, Sidha, Tun, LAli, Lahusune, Lampati, Simul, Siris, Kadam, Jarul, Shagun, Kawla, Nim, Kathal, Odal, Diloniya, Gamar, Tiloniya, Malotas, Chalta, Ficus etc. The hill forest species rea katus, Mandane, Bahukath, Phalame, Panisaj, Gokul etc. You can see multi species Bamboo, Orchids, Medicinal plants, Shrubs, Canes, Herbs, and Grasses etc.

The major part of the undulating landscape of the Jalpaiguri District is covered with sprawling tea gardens. Tea garden owners have come forward with the view of promoting Tea Tourism in the district. Accommodations are being arranged for the tourists in the tea garden Bungalows and guided tours are provided for taking the tourist through the entire process of tea manufacturing.

Another major attraction is the ethnic culture of this region manifested in so many forms including folk songs, folk dance etc. A number of these ethnic tribes have been living here for ages whose culture and festivals have given a different colour to this place. Coochbehar is nearest of Dooars and Tarai area. Coochbehar also has a number of attractions for the tourists including the Royal Palace, The Madanmohan temple, Sagardighi, Kamteshwari Temple, Madhupur Dham, Goshanimari, Baneshwar Temple, Patlakhawa Forest, Rashik Bill etc.
